Getting Started with Chapter 1

So far this book seems very gripping. I am already really interested in this book because it grabs your attention right at the start. The book starts out when Charles Monet is loner that worked at a sugar factory in western Kenya. He works near Mount Elgon (which straddles the border of Uganda and Kenya) and he is very interested in exploring throughout this forest. After work sometimes he would go out into the forest leisurely. He liked to interact with the monkeys and laid food down for birds in the forest. He then decides that he wants to go through Mount Elgon, he takes a friend with him on his expedition. They come across a cave called Kitum Cave. This cave is very dangerous because there are elephants and monkeys and bats that live in there. While they are going through this cave, they come across a board that looks like a roof in the cave. However, there is guano on this and Monet starts to get really sick from this guano that came from the bats. It is described as an ooze that must be dangerous. I just got into the more exciting part of this story so far. I am anxious to find out what Monet is sick from and if he is going to survive. And what happened to his other friend...that is the question i have yet to answer!

  1. I love the way that Preston ties together these two dramatically different locations - Kenya and a D.C. suburb. Things that happen half way across the world can have unintentional consequences.
